LivLUG Saturday Social - May 19th @ Shipping Forecast - 1pm

Greetings all, it's that time again. The LivLUG Saturday social is this weekend and I'll be at The Shipping Forecast on Slater St between 1pm and 4pm, maybe later if there's people around. Bob is away this month but I have custody of the fluffy Tux and GNU mascots so they will be on the table as normal.

It's an informal social meeting and all are welcome. So just come along. We don't even have to talk about Linux, other topics are allowed. You can find more info about the group at http://livlug.org.uk

I will hang around and see who turns up but from asking other members it seems many people are away. If you are planning to come along please let me know. Otherwise I'll be sat there talking to 2 stuffed toys all afternoon and the conversation could be slow.

Thanks everyone, hope to see some of you there :)

Dan

Liverpool LUG meeting with Hakim Cassimally - Enchanted Objects: the Internet of Things for Humans - Wednesday 2nd May 2012

On Wednesday, 2nd May 2012, the Liverpool Linux User Group¹ will be
meeting. Hakim Cassimally² will be shedding light on the mysterious
concept of the Internet of Things³ in a talk entitled "Enchanted
Objects: the Internet of Things for Humans". In Hakim's words:

"In this talk, we'll look at bubbles, owls, bicycles, enchanted
objects, designing for humans, and open source frothy goodness!"

We will meet at the Liverpool Social Centre⁴ at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm
start. After the talk, we will venture to a local drinking
establishment for beverages and further discussion.

Liverpool Social Centre is next door to the News from Nowhere bookshop
on Bold Street⁵. To access the centre, press the bell for the
basement on the left of the door and someone will come up and let you
in.

This should be another illuminating, possibly even inspiring talk :-)

Liverpool LUG meeting - Saturday 21st April 2012

On Saturday, 21st April 2012, the Liverpool Linux User Group¹ will be
meeting. This is a Saturday meeting so there's no talk.

Last month proceedings were distrupted somewhat by the presence of
bands practicing in Studio 2, even though we occupied a sound-proof
booth. This month, I thought we might try meeting at The Shipping
Forecast² on Slater Street³. And also at an earlier time, seeing as
they serve meals there.

So, the place to be is The Shipping Forecast at 12.30pm next Saturday.
As always, a fluffy Tux penguin toy will be on display because it's
cute and cool. Depending on the swiftness of the US Postal Service,
it may even be joined by a cute and cool fluffy GNU toy :-) In case
you need it, my mobile number is 0783 034 5001.

Cheers,

Bob

Liverpool LUG Meeting - Wed April 4th

Hi Folks,

It's time to announce another LivLUG meeting already. So here goes...

Date: Wednesday April 4th at 7:30pm

Location: Liverpool Social Centre, Bold St, L1 4HY - Underneath the News From Nowhere bookshop. It's the door just to the right of the shop entrance and there's a buzzer for the basement. If you have problems finding us please feel free to call me (Dan) and I'll meet you at the door - 07779 165 528

This month our own Bob Ham will be giving a talk and practical demo on IPv6 networking. I don't have full details yet but I did happen across this recent New York times review:

"Bob Ham really demystifies IPv6 in his own inimitable way with this unique one man show. The addition of musical numbers was surprising but welcome and really added to the drama. I don't mind admitting that I shed a tear during the haunting ballad 'The IP Address To My Heart', and how he got those dancing elephants down the stairs I'll never know. Outstanding!".

Ok, joking aside I'm sure it'll be a great night so do come and join us. If you haven't been before don't worry, the group is informal and very friendly. All are welcome, from complete novice to Kernel hacker. We'll no doubt adjourn to a nearby pub after the talk too.

<SIDE NOTE> If you can bring a camera along we'd appreciate it. There's a dearth of photos from LivLUG and we could really use some to promote the group online. So this is a call to arms. Thanks in advance. </SIDE NOTE>

Hope to see many of you there,

Dan Lynch

Liverpool LUG meeting with Sam Tuke - Free Software Vs. Open Source: how much freedom is enough? - Wednesday 7th March 2012

On Wednesday, 7th March 2012, the Liverpool Linux User Group will be
meeting. Sam Tuke of the Free Software Foundation Europe¹ will be
giving a talk entitled "Free Software Vs. Open Source: how much
freedom is enough?" An abstract follows:

At what point does advocating freedom become tyrannical? Freedom to
use the license we want, or freedom from certain kinds of
restrictions? Can't we let the license suit the purpose? As long as
I'm able to choose what I use, what's the problem? Can't we all just
get along?

These questions and more will be addressed in a talk about the
relationship between the two major traditions: Free Software and
Open Source. The relevance of the debate to society, the impact on
developers, and the history of the movement will all be addressed
during discussion of these difficult subjects.

We will meet at the Liverpool Social Centre² at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm
start. After the talk, we will venture to Studio 2³ for beverages and
further discussion.

Liverpool Social Centre is next door to the News from Nowhere bookshop
on Bold Street⁴. To access the centre, press the bell for the
basement on the left of the door and someone will come up and let you in.

This promises to be another fascinating talk :-)
